Go Fund a Girl Child is a rural and peri-urban feminist organization that was primarily founded and led by a group of adolescent girls and young women who survived various forms of gender based violence. The organization is registered with the National Youth Council of Malawi as a youth-led organization. It is aimed at providing an enabling environment for rural and peri-urban adolescent girls and young women such that they are empowered to become powerful agents of change for the social and economic development of a Malawian Society. At the moment, the organization operates in the following T/As in Mangochi; Bwananyambi, Katuli, Chilipa, Mponda, Chowe, Jalasi, Makanjira, Chimwala and Lulanga
Key Thematic Areas
1. Education.
The organization operates a bursary scheme that targets vulnerable AGYWs, teen mothers and child marriage survivors. A total of 70 AGYWs have benefited from the scheme. 7 of the girls are now in public universities whilst 15 are in different technical colleges and teaching colleges. The organization also runs a mobile library, adult literacy centre and a mentorship program. As part of International Day of the Girl Child commemoration, Go Fund a Girl Child donates school uniforms to underprivileged learners each year. So far, a total of 2000 learners have benefitted from the initiative.
2. Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights.
Go Fund a Girl Child focuses on capacity building of service providers and young people, advocacy on reproductive justice and (social behavioral change communication) mobilization for service provision to meet the increasing demand for services among girls and young people. Under this thematic area, the organization has a network of youth SRHR champions who were trained as Comprehensive Sexuality Education Facilitators, Youth Community Based Distribution Agents, Safe Space Mentors, Teen Clubs Mentors and Safe Abortion Advocacy. The institution has also trained older Community Based Distribution Agents in Youth Friendly Health Services Provision. The ultimate goal of the activities under this thematic area is to ensure that the crisis of the unmet health needs of AGYW and young people is addressed.
3. Gender and Development.
The organization focuses on child protection, as well as effective prevention and response to gender based violence. Emphasis is placed on the strengthening of local institutions, youth networks and referral pathways at the local level. The organization also manages survivors’ network platforms where psychosocial support is provided to AGYW who survived gender based violence. Male engagement is incorporated in gender related interventions.
4. Climate Justice
The primary interest of the organization is on integration of SRHR and GBV services in climate change interventions, especially during disaster response. Go Fund a Girl Child also implements activities around environment and waste management. Vulnerable adolescent girls and young women are taught how to manufacture organic fertilizer and briquettes which they use and sell for profit.
5. Economic Empowerment
Under this thematic area Go Fund a Girl Child focuses on provision of grants, entrepreneurial and vocational skills to vulnerable AGYW in order to reduce their vulnerability to violence and as a recovery strategy from violence.
6. Advocacy
Go Fund a Girl Child engages in policy advocacy on issues affecting the well-being of adolescent girls and young women. The organization also lobbies for meaningful engagement, involvement and representation of AGYW in decision making processes.
